Kirkcudbright’s origins are ancient. The name comes from “Kirk of St Cuthbert” and reflects the town’s early importance as an ecclesiastical centre. In the late 19th century it became a magnet for Scottish artists, and is now know as The Artists’ Town, hosting generations of painters, craftmakers and artisans, a culture still thriving today.
